Parsippany man gets probation for grabbing woman in card store

By PEGGY WRIGHT • STAFF WRITER • June 2, 2010

A 71-year-old Parsippany man who was accused of grabbing a shop clerk's breast was admitted Tuesday into a special probation program for first-time offenders.

Ramanlal M. Patel was charged with criminal sexual contact after he walked into the Hallmark store in the Morris Hills Shopping Center on Route 46 in Parsippany on April 12 and grabbed an employee's breast over her clothing, police said.

The worker reported that Patel used the words "beautiful" and "big breasts" before he groped her.

Without admitting any wrongdoing, Patel — who walks with a cane — was accepted by Superior Court Judge Philip Maenza into Morris County's Pre-Trial Intervention program.

He will be supervised on probation for two years, must perform 25 hours of community service and pay $125 in fines. He cannot return to the shop or have any contact with the victim.

If he successfully completes the PTI terms, the charge will be dismissed and he will not have a criminal record. Patel did not make any comments in court except to respond that he understood the PTI terms when asked by defense attorney Joel Harris.

Patel was arrested for the incident after the victim later saw him walking along Parsippany Boulevard and contacted police.
