Hi,
I came across your extremely insightful article on the perspective upon our little desi culture based in the western end of the world. It really tells the story of both sides, the parents ( or we can say your point of view) next to the first generation or the CUTE DESI as you call it. I was born in Bangladesh, i have been living in the Land of the free ( highly doubtful considering current events) for the last 9 years or so. I am 21 years old, and some of the issues that you mentioned, i went through the struggles in first hand. For the longest time i wanted to speak out, not only to my ignorant parents but the whole bengali society. Make my stress lighter alittle bit and maybe help out all my contemporary desis. Your article just gave me courage and an idea. We have a bengali newspaper based in NYC( where i reside ), i would like to take some ideas of yours and translate them into bangla and summarize for the bangali society itself. I am not trying to distinct Bengali society as a different cult aside from the Desi world as a whole. Unfortunately bengalis are one step behind Indians and pakistanis. It could be the immigration factor, since Bengalis entered this nation at a later period of time, but that's not the point here. All i really want to do is let my parents know how a desi parent or an elder desi like yourself look at both sides, and let them be the judge if they are right or wrong. Since they are always emplying that they are ALWAYS RIGHT. So if i may have your permission to take some of your ideas that were talked about in your article "CONFUSED DESIS! WHO IS REALLY CONFUSED? PARENTS OR CHILDREN?" Let it be my chance to express the thoughts of the genreation X from the bengali society. Thank you for your time. Please do reply as soon possible. Thank you agian for an enlightening article.

Dear Arman:

It is great to hear from you.

I think it will be a great idea to translate the theme in Bengali and make it more suitable to Bengali Culture. We are also working on translating in different Indian languages.

By the way I presented a talk on "Confused Desi" at the Bangala Association of North America (BANT) annual convention last year in Dallas. The young people who invited me to come and speak were scared to death the whole time I was talking. They were worried that I might say something offensive to their elders in the audience! Thank God I was able to speak my mind without grossly offending anyone!

If you would like to put that info on my website it would be great. Let me know if you are making some big changes in my article. I think it is OK to disagree with me or present different point of view.

I am not sure where you read my article, but now I have my own dedicated website for the subject - www.vijaymehta.com. You might want to visit it and also check out the survey of Desi Minds. I have also addressed some issues such as dating, etc., on the forum.

I am speaking at Biennial Telugu Association of North America, July 4-6 in San Jose CA. Besides "Confused Desi who is really confused - Parents or Children?" I am also presenting "Art of parenting." So stay tuned and also post your views on my forum.

Having talked to the Desi Youth and Parents from all parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh I have come to realize that part of what you perceive as being step behind is being touted by our generation as conservative culture. Frankly I think that comes from insecurity and "parental peer pressure" where even when we know we are wrong we are not able to admit it. This is so counter productive.

If possible put a link to my web site in your article so people can visit and express their views.

As you see I am replying you very quickly, because I do not want your fervor to express your views on subject cool down. Who knows some other distraction might move you away from this great mission!!

Best wishes, keep me posted.
