I am not a medical student, but I do know few medical students who did not match for residency. If people have failed to get a residency the second try then Vijay Uncle, would you recommend the third time? What do you recommend to medical students who do not match?

It seems that the number of applicants will be soaring and we have to take of consideration of medical schools having more seats, new MD and DO schools, more students heading to foreign countries to study, and all. I do believe every year will get tougher especially for specialities that are considered "less competitive" or in demand of doctors.

Vijay Uncle what can a person do if they had failed to match the 2nd time? What can a person do during the waiting process in order to be competitive for the next match?

Unfortunately there is no simple answer. As you can see Carrebean Graduated have 50% probabilty of matching and Foreign born Foreign Medical Students have 40% chance of matching.

Those who do not find the residency this year will be adding to the applicant pool for the next year.

So it is the survival of the fittest. One has to become creative. Get a research job. Get MPH and show the program that you are good. Or just work with some prominent doctors with the hope that he or she will recommend you to a program and you will find a job.

I think it is important for those going to outside medical school to read all these so early on they factor the problems they will be facing later on. If you do end up becoming an FMG your only hope is to score the highest in USMLE

You might also need to focus on those programs that traditionally do not fill up. Check the NIRIMP list and contact the program director who did not fill up all position. Even if they filled up this year may be they should be the one you work on next year.

Consider changing the specialty. Some specialties are easier than others to get a residency in. May be you can switch your specialty and if you are really good and get great recommendations you might be able to switch after a year or two.

Hope this helps.
