Four-year-old in Desperate Need of Bone Marrow or Cord Blood
By LISA TSERING May 20, 2010 01:49:00 PM

Four-year-old Devan, an adorable, curly-haired little boy of mixed Indian and European heritage, is in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant, or umbilical cord blood, from a donor who possesses the same Human Leukocyte Antigens he has. Devan thought he had beat his rare form of high-risk leukemia, but he relapsed in 2008 and now his parents have revealed that he has less than three months to live.

“His doctors believe his life depends on a bone marrow transplant that they hope to do after 12 weeks of chemotherapy. What is difficult is finding a donor match — 1 in 200,000 in his case, we’ve been told — and we haven’t found one yet,” his parents, Indira Lakshmanan and Dermot Tatlow of Washington, D.C., said in a statement.

Lakshmanan is a journalist and foreign correspondent now working for Bloomberg News, and Tatlow is a photojournalist.

“Our only child Devan needs your help. You or someone you know might be the person who can save Devan’s life. All you need to do is a simple cheek swab to find out. Donating is easy — these days it’s much like a simple blood draw,” said Lakshmanan and Tatlow.

According to the couple’s Web site,, bone marrow extraction is an outpatient procedure, and the most common method is comparable to giving blood, but for a bit longer. There are many ways to sign up for the bone marrow registry, but it takes time to process your sample and enter your details in the databases, so the sooner the better, they said. Because Devan is of mixed South Asian/European heritage, matching his tissue markers is particularly challenging, they added.

However, chances of finding a match for Devan are even better with umbilical cord blood. Readers who are pregnant and interested in donating their baby’s umbilical cord blood, or those who would like to donate privately banked cord blood if it is a match, are urged to contact the family.

Those of mixed heritage are urgently requested to e-mail Devan’s parents at
