Imagine the joy and happiness that was brought to the family and friends of Vinod by a perfect stranger.

Here is his letter. It speaks volume. Please share with others.

"Good news! Doctors found a donor for me!"

Dear Friends,

I am very happy to share a good news that National Marrow Donor Program/Doctors identified a potential donor for me and donor is willing to donate marrow/stem cells.

Thank you very much for all your prayers/wishes/blessings/thoughts/support.

We will be leaving to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (http://www.seattlecca.org)
Seattle, WA on September 1st, 2010 for my marrow/stem cell transplant procedure.

Please check www.savevinod.com for my treatment updates.

Please forward this message to all the people who dedicated their valuable time to conduct the drives for me.

If you get a phone call from NMDP that you are a potential match for a patient, please proceed for donation as my doctors are looking for a back up plan for me.

You all added 15000+ people to the registry by conducting the drives for me. Proved again my strength is my friends.

My special thanks to NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program, http://www.marrow.org/), SAMAR (South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters, http://www.samarinfo.org/), AADP (Asian American Donor Program, http://www.aadp.org/), A3M (Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches, http://www.asianmarrow.org/) for their great cooperation to conduct the drives.

P.S: A word of advice to all future parents is to take advantage of cord blood banking. It is the best thing we can do as a preventive measure. If you want to save your new born baby cord blood in a private cord blood bank for your family personal use, you need to pay money. But if you save cord blood with NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program) for public use, it is absolutely FREE!

More info: http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Donate_Cord_Blood_Share_Life/How_to_Donate_Cord_Blood/index.html

Saving a cord blood today is saving lives in future. Please, please do it.

God bless you all.

Dear Friends,

I Thank You All for the continuous support you have provided me.
As you may have already known, a 37 year old male, Indian, potential Donor had come forward to help me out. It is very rare to find a potential match and we couldnít thank the person enough through the doctors (NMDP and Doctors didn't share the donor's identity). It was one of the happiest days in a long time for our family. We have not seen our kids (7 year old boy and 7 months girl) in a while as they are staying with their grand parents in India because of my health problems. The thought of seeing them again in 6-9 months gave us all the hope and strength we needed.

We left for Seattle immediately as it is where the procedure is supposed to take place. My wife took time off from her work to stay with me. Every test conducted on me and the donor to confirm the 9/10 match has come out positive. I am in very good shape for transplant procedure. Donor was scheduled to give his marrow/stem cells on the last week of September, 2010 and my tentative transplant date will be the same day or next day.

Suddenly, Unfortunately the donor has dropped out due to personal reasons. It was very disheartening to hear the news. This hurt us more than when we first came to know about my health problem. We still did not give up hope. We request you to please do the same with your continuous support.

We hope that the donorís issues be resolved soon, which will allow him to come back to save our family in time.

I request you, Please forward this message to each and every one of your indian friends, Indian associations, indian group e-mails, so that if donor happens to see this message we hope he will change his mind and come back for donation as soon as possible and save my life.

Please conduct more drives for me.

God bless you all.

What a let down? The donor was a pretty good match. Somehow he/she came up some personal issues and did not come forward to donate.
According to NMDP when a Caucasian is a match it is more than 66% of time that he/she will actually donate the bone marrow while when an Asian Indian is a match there is more then 66% chance that the donor will not come forward. I thick we need to continue to educate and inspire out community.
Donating the bone marrow is not a dangerous procedure. Among thousands who have donated there has been no case of serious complication or death. ~ Vijay Mehta
