xx Health Care Related Activity..
« Thread started on: Mar 25th, 2003, 11:03am »

Here I plan to disucss the importance of quality health related activities. This is extremely important aspect of your application. Medical schools have rejected applicants with 3.8 or above GPA (from Ivy League School) and MCAT of 36 or above, when the candidate did not have meningful medical experience!

We are not looking for someone who has experience to practise medicine. But if you are interested in spending rest of your life to this profession we expect you to have good idea as to-what actual medical care is all about?

Sometimes, you can combine medically related experience with demonstration of your altruism. For example if you work in a nursing home actually taking care of the patient, or a rehab where you actually get hands on experience.

There are several ways to achieve this:
Shadow a physician that you might know or you can actually call up someone and ask for assistance.
You can call up a hospital and ask for permission to observe.
You may get a job that exposes to you medical care in action. work for doctor's office, get a job as a scribe, phlebotomist etc.
You may join a structured program.

A solid experience in this area can go a long way proving that you have good understanding of health care and a desire to help fellow human beings.

Please share with us if you know of any good way to get a meaningful health related experience.

Some of the programs I am posting have already passed the deadline for application but it will help you to apply for the next year.

I'm not sure if this might be good enough or not, but you could also volunteer at a local hospital. I do that right now and I currently work in the Orthopedics department. My job involves a lot of patient interaction and I get a chance to sit down with them, talk to them, see how they are feeling, ask if they need anything, and just do things that a nurse tells you to do (get them water, pillows, blankets, toiletries, food, nurse or aid if they need medicine or need to use the bathroom). It's all basically nurse-related work but it's actual hands-on experience; not the pathetic volunterring you can do by sitting at the front desk all day and greeting all the people that walk through the door. What do you think Vijay Uncle?

xx All volunteer work is not alike!

Dear Pratik,

Some candidates have false notion that since they have some volunteer work so it should be fine. However, all volunteer activities are not alike. There are ways you should look at the volunteer activities:

1. Does it show your enthusiasm to server human beings or animals.

2. Does it expose to the reality of medicine by exposure to what is the life of a doctor like?

3. Is it a variety of exposure rather than six months of same nursing home?

4. Did you learn any thing while volunteering, rather than just filling up your resume?

5. How did you manage to go to the volunteer activity? If someone works with his dad's best friend that is not as creative as someone who contacts total stranger and manages to work with them.

6. An activity that exposes you to actual clinical activity is better than just being a gofer and passing water and talking to them.

7. Volunteer activity that puts you in teaching or leadership position are good because they give you a chance to improve your communication and think of others.

8. Volunteer activity that makes you realize the problem facing medical field today, is good.

9. Mission trips to other countries are good because they expose you to different culture.

10. If you are being paid that is a job and not a volunteer activity.

Just remember nearly every applicant has done volunteer activity your job is to let them know yours is much better than others!!

So, find the activity where you get to serve and help others at the same time you help your self by becoming a better person.

Well Vijay Uncle,

What can we do that meets the criterion and points you have given?

Those are not points but differant way of looking at your volunteer activity and make sure for the same amount of time invested you get the maximum out of it - vijay uncle
